The Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (IGC – link to IGC) was founded and is supported by the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian (FCG – link to FCG) to carry on biomedical research and education. The IGC operates as a "host institution", offering excellent facilities and services to foreign and Portuguese research groups or individual scientists, in particular to young post-doctoral fellows who are expected to develop their projects and form their groups in complete autonomy.

The Institute's scientific interests are focused on the genetic basis of development and evolution of complex systems, privileging organism-centred approaches in experimental models that include plants, yeast, flies and mice, and on the genetics of complex human diseases. A strong theoretical sector (Estudos Avançados de Oeiras, EAO – link to EAO) is one of the Institute's specificities, the others being the quality of the services, and a strong investment on international exchange in the form of graduate courses, workshops and symposia.

The IGC hosts the scientific coordination of CEL and is engaged in research and training in various aspects of epidemiology though specialized research groups: Theoretical Epidemiology (link), Evolutionary Biology (link), Disease Genetics (link) and Human Genetics (link).

The UL is represented in CEL through 6 research organizations:

Instituto de Medicina Molecular (IMM – link to IMM) hosts 23 research units covering research activities distributed over 3 programs: Molecular & Developmental Biology, Immunology & Infectious Diseases, and Neurosciences. Multidisciplinarity is strongly encouraged. The proximity with the University Hospital and Medical School creates opportunities for interactions between basic and clinical sciences, thus promoting translational research.

Complexo Interdisciplinar (CIUL – link to CIUL) is a modern facility dedicated exclusively to the support of research and post-graduate training. Tradition has brought mathematics and physics to CIUL, who, through the enthusiasm and dedication of its members plays a pivotal role in the integration of sound quantitative approaches with other disciplines. CIUL hosts 9 research units, 2 of which are actively involved in CEL: Centre for Mathematics and Applications (CMAF) and Centre for Theoretical and Computational Physics (CFTC).

Centro de Estatística e Aplicações (CEA – link to CEA) being the largest and one of the most active research unit of statistics research in Portugal, is in an excellent position to contribute to the developments of statistics requested by the biomedical sciences.

Laboratório de Sistemas Informáticos de Grande Escala (LASIGE – link to LASIGE) is a research unit whose mission is to promote research, training, and technology transfer in areas such as: computer networks, distributed algorithms, security, real-time, databases, multimedia information retrieval; digital publishing, electronic commerce, and bioinformatics.

Instituto de Ciência Aplicada e Tecnologia (ICAT – link to ICAT) has as its mission the economic establishment, transfer and exploration of the scientific knowledge emerging from the university, promoting research in collaboration with industry, protection of industrial and intellectual property and the establishment of new enterprises.

Instituto de Ciencias Sociais (ICS – link to ICS) hosts 200 researchers engaged in research and graduate education in social sciences, namely Anthropology, Political Sciences, History and Siciology, Geography, Social Psicology and International Relations. The Institute is increasing involved in the study of behaviour factors in health and disease.
